MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid and the Sandra Ibarra Foundation for Solidarity Against Cancer organize the initiative with the aim of providing answers to patients’ questions about the disease.

  • The meeting organized workshops on how to wear scarves, how to prevent lymphedema, and a round table where the image of cancer in the media was discussed.

It is estimated that by the year 2015 more than 90,000 women will be diagnosed with cancer in Spain, according to data from the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM). After diagnosis, many questions arise on the prognosis of the disease, advances in treatment, how to deal with the side effects of the therapies and, in particular, how to find one’s place in a new, generally unknown environment.

For that reason, MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid organized, in collaboration with the Sandra Ibarra Foundation for Solidarity Against Cancer, the II ‘I Am Life’ Meeting for Women with Cancer last April 8 in the CaixaForum in Madrid.

With a multidisciplinary approach, the meeting allowed patients, family members and friends to share their experiences with others living the same reality every day. The goal of the meeting was also to provide information of use to these patients on aspects of their lives that may have been affected by the disease.

During the meeting, renowned specialists from MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid gave talks on ‘Technology at the service of cancer treatment’, ‘Cancer in the couple: a question of two’ and ‘Healthy food to prevent cancer’. In addition, there were workshops where participants took part in working with ‘the importance of internal language’, ‘personal image and wearing scarves’ or ‘preventing lymphedema and self-drainage’. The day concluded with a round table where the image of cancer projected in the media was analyzed.
