Multidisciplinary Units

Our different clinical services constitute the basis around which the healthcare activity at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid is organized.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of MD Anderson Madrid is the multidisciplinary character of the medical team. The more than 150 specialists making up our center are part ofMultidisciplinary Units specializing in each type of tumor, in which their work is coordinated to develop personalized treatments for each patient.
This means that any single case has the benefit of the joint vision of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and radiologists who work closely together and contribute their knowledge and experience to make the treatment a success.
Furthermore, there is a solid, continuous relationship between the professionals at MD Anderson Madrid and those at MD Anderson in Houston, sharing protocols for the more complex cases in clinical sessions. This multidisciplinary approach to cancer allows a team of specialists to work together to ensure the best possible treatment for each patient.

An overall improvement in quality of life
Patients and their families receive the global care that is so important in preserving their quality of life during the process of the disease:

  • Improvements in patient-family-medical staff communication.
  • Personalized and on-call care and treatment.
  • Assessment of each case in clinical sessions with the multidisciplinary team that is the Integral Support Unit
  • Integral care for the patient and his/her family in the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects
  • Accommodation of the needs of patients and their families.

To maximize patient wellbeing
The Integral Support Unit is made up of a group of specialists whose aim is to achieve the best possible quality of lifefor the patient, conserving as much autonomy as possible and therefore contributing to the patients’ functional independence in the advanced stage of cancer.

In short, the aim is to guarantee the patient’s physical, psychological and emotional comfort and that of their family.

The Integral Support Unit team provides personalized assessment, giving the patient all the information he/she needs. The team also offers the family specific training on caring for the patient and on handling all his/her needs.

We have developed an integral and coordinated work methodology on the patient-family unit to optimize control of symptoms and to be able to alleviate the psychological and emotional stress caused by the disease in the patient and family members.

A multidisciplinary team to attend multiple needs
The Integral Support Unit consists of a multidisciplinary team made up of a physician, nurse, psychologist, physiotherapist and nutritionist. The team also receives the support of the Patient Care department and the team of volunteers.

Another important aspect is that the unit works in coordination with the hospital’s other services and the regular medical team (the oncologist, hematologist or surgeon), who are available to the patient to optimize his/her treatment from any of these specialties. Thus, there is a complete, personalized response for all patients.

hospitalization – day hospital – outpatients – home care
The Integral Support Unit guarantees care for the patient when and where needed and throughout the different phases of the disease, whether in hospital (while admitted, in the day hospital or as an outpatient) or at home.
