DVT: Deep Venous Thrombosis
It is thrombus formation in a deep vein of the body, usually in the lower regions of the legs and thighs. This thrombusmay interfere with circulation preventing blood supply to this area or move to another body area causing damage where it becomes lodged. Possible causes include prolonged immobilization during the postoperative period and use of certain drugs. To prevent it, subcutaneous heparin is administered and compression stocking are worn.
