Santiago Gonzalez takes over from Riccardo Audisio, Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool and specialist in geriatric oncology. Before being named President of the ESSO, the announcement of which was made at the 36th ESSO Congress in Krakow on September 14-16, the specialist held the positions of General Secretary, President-elect and Board Member of the Society’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Gonzalez Moreno is also currently President of the Spanish Society for Surgical Oncology (SEOQ) and sits on the Board of Directors of the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI), positions he will combine with his work during the two years he will be at the head of the ESSO. The doctor is also a member of several scientific societies, such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) in North America or the International Society of Surgery and is part of various leading research groups, like the Spanish Cooperative Group for Gastrointestinal Tumor Therapy (TTD) or the Spanish Group of Peritoneal Cancer Surgery (GECOP).

Having gained his degree in Medicine and Surgery at the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1992, Dr. Gonzalez Moreno did his residency in General and Gastrointestinal Tract Surgery at the 12th October Hospital in Madrid until 1998, when he transferred to the Washington Cancer Institute to do a fellowship in Peritoneal Surface Malignancies. He went on to complete postgraduate studies in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Navarra, Pamplona in 2003. In 2004 he obtained an EUMS European Board of Surgical Oncology qualification.

He is the author or co-author of numerous national and international papers and an organizer of or guest speaker on courses and at congresses.

In addition, Dr. Gonzalez Moreno is an associate professor with the Department of Surgical Oncology at The University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston and associate professor in Oncology at the Francisco de Vitoria University in Madrid.
